Securing your network & protecting your business information

Based on recent internet-based threats following the WannaCry Ransomware incident along with the continuation of various types of viruses and other cryptolocker variants, it is BlueBerryIT’s strong recommendation that all clients invest in a firewall to protect their valuable business data from external threats and minimise the risk of staff doing something accidental.

What is a firewall?

A firewall is a network security device that monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic and decides whether to allow or block specific traffic based on a defined set of security rules.

Firewalls have been a first line of defense in network security for over 25 years. They establish a barrier between secured and controlled internal networks that can be trusted and untrusted outside networks, such as the Internet.

A firewall can be hardware, software, or both.

BlueBerryIT’s recommendation is the FortiGate 50E appliance which can be (in most cases) be installed in place of your existing modem and then forms your gateway to the internet.

The FortiGate 50E should be purchased and installed on your network along with two annual subscription services – one mandatory and one optional.

Mandatory Subscription – FortiGate’s Unified Threat Management (UTM) subscription. This is an additional layer of anti-virus and anti-malware scanning that is installed at the gateway so that all traffic (coming & going) is scanned for infection.

Optional Subscription – FortiGate’s Reporting Services. While the appliance console allows you to track all internet usage it only provides a very short history. The additional Reporting Services allows you access to detailed reporting on all usage and allows the retention of up to 1GB of data (depending on usage this can be up to a month of data that can be stored if required).

While the FortiGate provides an additional level of protection it also helps businesses with managing Human Resource (HR) obligations by providing a tool to protect staff from themselves and reducing the risk of accidental security breaches. It also allows management to deal with any HR related issues to do with internet use during work time as they are able to provide proof of activity via the Reporting Services.

While any solution does not 100% protect your business from all cyber-based threats, the provision of a firewall minimises the risk significantly.
